Independent Living Services - Judson Center

Independent Living Services

Have you ever wondered what happens to children when “age out” of foster care?

1,600 youth over 18 “age out” of foster care each year. If these youth do not have identified guardians or adoptive families in place, they are often left without the support and care needed to live on their own.

Our team works with foster parents to provide Independent Living Services to youth ages 16-21 to help them prepare for life as a young adult. These services can include:

  •  Job training
  • Housing assistance
  • Mentoring
  • Health services
  • And other independent living skills

The youth are referred to Judson Center’s Independent Living program by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS), the courts, or private agencies.

There is an urgent need for host providers willing to rent rooms to youth who age out of foster care. Judson Center is also asking for financial and in-kind donations to help provide additional support for the young people.
