Speakers Night - Auditory Integration Training
Monday, October 11, 7 pm
Speaker: Cindy Wilson, MA, CCC, FAAA, Audiologist and owner of Innovative Hearing Services
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a term that is used by Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists and Psychologists. It apparently does not mean exactly the same thing to each of these professions, but there is a common thread. We will touch on the subject of APD and discuss how the condition relates to people on the Spectrum. The general recommendations that are given will be discussed, including AIT.
Auditory Integration Training, or AIT, is a sound based program that addresses auditory input problems. AIT is based on sensory integration principles. AIT does not change how a person hears; it changes how the brain takes sound in and uses it. Auditory input problems may include sound sensitivity (responding too much to sound) or “tuning out” behaviors (looks like person has a hearing loss, but hearing is normal). Some individuals have symptoms on both ends of the sensitivity continuum. Results vary, depending on the issues that need to be addressed, and the amount of change varies, too. Since beginning the AIT program at Children's Hospital of Michigan in 1992, well over 85% of the participants have reported a positive effect, regardless of age or diagnosis.
